This verse comes from the famous “love chapter” 1 Corinthians 13 of the Bible. It is better understood if we look at the whole passage from which it was taken:
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
I kind of understand all of the passage except for the part that says “believes all things.” If I have an erring child who keeps saying lies, will I believe all his lies because I love him? Obviously, that’s not what it means. It means that I should believe all that God promises concerning this child. That means I have to believe that God is working on my child’s heart while I keep loving and correcting him or her and praying for him or her so that one day he or she will learn not to be afraid to tell the truth because he or she knows I love him or her, simply because he or she is my child, not because of what a good, talented, obedient, hard-working or beautiful child he or she may be.
God is love. When I became a new believer an elderly believer suggested to me to read aloud the 1 Corinthians 13 chapter replacing the word “love” with “God” throughout, for a different perspective. I did and I gained a new understanding of God. Try it!
