Happy International Women’s Day!

This verse is the climax of the passage in Proverbs 31 that talks of the excellencies of a woman who fears God. “Fear” here is often misunderstood as fear for “an angry and judgmental God.” That is a lie. “Fear” here means a healthy feeling of reverence and awe towards the holy God. The word “fear” is used only for lack of a better word in the English language. God is love but God is also holy.

The passage talks about a woman who is trustworthy, talented, an entrepreneur, is physically fit, is merciful to the poor, whose speech is filled with wisdom, who manages her household well and is praised by her husband and children. She is so well described except for her physical appearance. Her most important trait is in fact being God-fearing. In our day when looks are so important this description of an outstanding woman is a glaring contrast.

The fear of the LORD is the keeping of God’s commandments, especially the first commandment: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” It is the keeping of God at His rightful place in the believer’s heart – putting God first above all, with no equal, no rival – to his or her affections, devotion, and awe.

Job 28:28 And to mankind He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
And to turn away from evil is understanding.’”
