Thirsting for God

When in deep need and trouble I feel this, too. Just like the psalmist who wrote this, I feel the next verse as well. (v.2)

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God;

When shall I come and appear before God?

In those days they really did “appear” before God or present themselves before God because the God of Israel required that they bring their offerings and celebrations of rejoicing and worship before God only in His Temple in Jerusalem. In the time of Moses and Solomon they really had the literal manifest presence of God in their Temple. The heading of the psalm says, “Thirsting for God in Trouble and Exile.” It’s possible that when this psalm was written they could even have been in exile, far from their land and Temple. But for believers today the Holy Spirit has come to dwell in their hearts. They can meet with God anywhere, any time. The only problem nowadays is that we have so many distractions – social media, cell phone, computer, etc. Hmmm, talk about idols that replace God these days. OK, I sign off now. Have to read my Bible and pray!
