Yeah, when you’re a believer you’re supposed to keep yourself innocent (flee from evil!) as a dove but also shrewd like a serpent! Whoa. Until now I am still learning how this works. It’s not always wise to engage. Sometimes, it’s wiser to just walk away. This is the “do not throw your pearls to pigs” (Matthew 7:6) kind of thing. Relating with people is really a hard thing; especially necessary to seek God for discernment on this matter. It’s no small thing. Jesus said it – be shrewd like a serpent! But thank God, He never sends me out alone, He’s always with me! The Holy Spirit is also the Spirit of discernment.
