The whole sentence reads:
Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor, 11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 13 contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.
Footnote: *saints – holy ones; i.e., God’s people
This is part of a passage written by the apostle Paul on desirable Christian conduct. He wrote similar passages in his other epistles and James’ epistle is totally on this topic. Rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation and being devoted to prayer are among what can be described as the heart of Christianity. They are inherent to the Christian walk and I don’t have to go out of my way to do those. But I believe I can get deeper in joy and be better enabled to persevere when I intentionally seek Him daily. I notice that if I skip some days in seeking Him it becomes harder to get back to the rhythm of being in that state of rejoicing and persevering again. But thank God, every day can be a new beginning with Jesus! Developing Christian conduct and character is like growing a tree. As they say, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is today.” It’s never too late. Never give up!
