My Rock, my Stronghold!

My Rock, my fortress, my bastion, my stronghold!

This is a picture of how my God protects me and keeps me secure in Him. There are many large rocks (monoliths) like this in Israel as well as in the neighboring areas where the children of Israel trekked. They usually kept their enemies out by building their cities on top of these monoliths. The higher and more difficult to scale the better. Thus the Bible talks about God’s protection for His people in this manner.

This Psalm was written by King David but the first person who referred to God as a strong Rock we can take refuge in was Moses. When Moses and the people of Israel were thirsty along the way coming out from Egypt going into the Promised Land (the land we now know as Israel), Moses struck this kind of monolithic rock in the wilderness and water flowed out from it – enough water for about a million of them and their flocks, too. God provided water from a rock. Then in the New Testament Jesus was struck on the side when He was hanging on the cross and water gushed from His side. Jesus Himself said, “Upon this rock I will build my church,” “this rock” referring to Himself as the Christ, the promised Anointed One of God. The Church is built upon that Rock. As a believer of Jesus Christ I stand upon that Rock! Yeehaaa!!
